Highlighting Techniques For Hair

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Highlighting is one of the most popular salon services, and this service can be performed using many different techniques.  Each technique produces a slightly different effect, but the basic goal is the same: to place lighter colored streaks throughout the hair.  These streaks can be subtle and natural-looking, or they can be bold and daring.  Here are some of the most common techniques used to highlight hair and the results that they can achieve.

 1. Foils.  Using foil to highlight the hair is the most common method, and is the method preferred by most stylists because it can produce a wide variety of different highlighted looks.  There are two main techniques stylists use when foiling the hair- “slicing” and “weaving”.  Weaving is used for more subtle highlighting, since it places less hair inside of the foil.  Slicing, on the other hand, results in more hair being placed inside the foil, and this produces a more noticeable highlight.  Many expert stylists employ both of these techniques at the same time.  Fine slices will produce less dramatic highlights, while thicker slices will result in a “chunkier” effect.  Perhaps the best thing about foiling the hair is that it allows the stylist the creative freedom to place as many different colors into the hair at one time.

Step by Step Instructions on How to Get Natural Blonde Highlights at Home.

WASH AND DRY HAIR. It’s best to begin with clean hair before you begin this treatment. Wash hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess dirt and product build-up. Follow with a quarter-size amount of conditioner to hydrate the hair. Allow your hair to air-dry or use a hair dryer set on low. Be sure that the hair is completely dry before moving on to the next step.

PREP HAIR. Comb through dry hair and remove any knots or tangles. The hairs natural oil can interfere with the lemon juice that will be applied so to reduce the amount of natural oil, run a small amount of baby powder into the scalp and roots of the hair where oil is produced.

Highlight Hair With Foil

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Foil highlights are perhaps the most versatile and creative form of highlights.  The use of foils allows the stylist to place as many or as few highlights in whichever area of the head they choose.  Cap highlights, on the other hand, limit the stylist in terms of placement, since the stylist is confined to pulling the hair through pre-determined holes in the cap.  Another benefit of foils is that it allows a stylist to place multiple shades of colors in the hair at one time; something that is very difficult with a highlighting cap.

Is it possible to highlight your own hair using foil?  It certainly is, but be warned: it is also very difficult to do on yourself.  The keys to successful foiling are foil placement, color application, and processing time.  Making a mistake with any of these variables will result in awful-looking highlights.  Managing all three variables on your own will be very difficult.

Foil placement is the first thing to consider.  Placing foils in different directions will result in different effects.  Generally, you want the highlights around the front hairline and bang area to be the most noticeable, and the highlights in the back of the head to be more subtle.  There are three distinct ways to section the hair which will go inside the foil.  The first technique is weaving, which results in a more natural look.  The second technique is slicing, in which a thin slice of hair is put into the foil.  The third technique is chunking, which results is a large chunk of hair being put into the foil.

The Highlight Colors For Brown Hair

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Brown hair presents a hairstylist with the perfect canvas.  Hair that is a medium shade of brown can be highlighted a variety of colors, and it can also be lowlighted in order to create a truly dimensional work of art.  What constitutes a medium shade of brown?  Well, first we must understand the “level system” which is used by all professional stylists.

The level system of haircolor, developed in France in the 19th century, organizes colors by their degree of lightness or darkness.  The lower the number, the darker the color.  For instance, a color that is a level 2 or 3 is very dark, while a color that is a level 9 or 10 is very light.  A medium shade of brown would fall between a level 6 and 7 on this scale.

If your shade of brown is dark (a level 5 or lower) it is best to stay away from pale blonde and platinum shades.  Dark hair has more melanin (the pigment which gives hair its color), so attaining a very light highlight color can be very damaging and unpredictable.  It also tend to look very trashy or tacky.
